First Forums - Trigger: The Ripple Effect of Gun Violence

Please join us Sunday, April 15 from 12:15-1:45 p.m. for April's First Forums, an opportunity for open dialogue and faithful disagreement about social issues. We will watch the documentary Trigger: The Ripple Effect of Gun Violence, a documentary about gun violence from the Presbyterian Church (USA). This documentary, which explores the impact of gun violence on communities, will beget the question whether gun violence is a public health issue. We will discuss how our faith informs this issue and what we can do about it.

Hilltoppers: Henry Ford Fair Lane Estate

All are invited to Hilltoppers on April 5 at noon. Come for a special preview of one of this summer’s outings—to Henry Ford’s Fair Lane Estate in Dearborn. On Thursday, June 28, we will visit Fair Lane, the final residence of Henry and Clara Ford. It is currently closed to the public for a five-year $62 million dollar renovation, but First Pres’ Mature Ministries have been invited to visit and talk to the team responsible for its unparalleled transformation.

First Forums: #MeToo, #ChurchToo, Part 2

In October 2017, the hashtag #MeToo became a national sensation following the revelation of Harvey Weinstein’s repeated sexual misconduct. The phrase identifies the unfortunate reality that sexual harassment and abuse are all too common in the United States. How do we respond to this reality in our lives and in our congregation? Erin Erin Martinez-Gilliard will encourage us to process and discuss ideas about how we express consent, communicate nonverbally, and challenge unhealthy norms.

Men’s Gymnastics Championships

Christian Life Academy: Dr. Rodger Nishioka

Creating a New Story of Faith: Faith Formation in the 21st Century with Dr. Rodger Nishioka. Please join us as Dr. Rodger Nishioka, Director of Adult Educational Ministries at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, KS, leads us in “Forming a Faith for All,” an event for church leaders, parents, families, young people and adults. On Saturday, November 10, Dr. Nishioka will be the keynote speaker at the Officers' Retreat.

Hilltoppers Welcomes Author Scott Ellsworth

On Thursday, January 11 at noon, Hilltoppers welcomes award-winning author Scott Ellsworth. Dr. Scott Ellsworth teaches courses on African American history, Southern literature, and crime and justice in contemporary U.S. society at UM. Longest Night Service

We know the darkness — both literal and figurative – that comes around the Winter Solstice. For those grieving, uncertain, facing illness, or feeling melancholy during the holidays, this season is especially hard. This service speaks to the sadness we feel. Dr. Ken McFayden Visits First Pres

Ken McFayden, Ph.D., joins us to facilitate visioning and strategic planning at the Officers’ Retreat and will preach on Sunday, November 12. An ordained Presbyterian minister, he serves as Academic Dean and Professor of Ministry and Leadership Development at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, and teaches courses in the areas of congregational leadership and administration.
