Carson Smith: Young Adult Volunteer

Carson Smith: YAV, New York City, 2018-2019

Carson Smith is a member of our congregation, a 2017 graduate of the University of Michigan, and is now serving a second year as a Young Adult Volunteer in New York City. The YAV program is a one-year service position in the PCUSA that has locations all around the world. YAVs live alongside others of faith, participate in the needs of their community, and experience new and meaningful relationships. We send our prayers and blessings as Carson continues this adventure!

Last year, Carson spent his first YAV year in Colombia. He accompanied church partners and worked with children from low-income families in an area that has been affected by the country’s internal conflict. This particular experience was a lesson in listening carefully to the ways love, trauma, spirit, and humor are embodied among peoples.

A curiosity in peacemaking—strengthened by faith—guided Carson to consider a second YAV year in New York City. There, he serves with the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations, the PC(USA)’s voice to the international community.
