As school starts, many of us think back to or look forward to new shoes, a bulging backpack, and the excitement of beginning of a new year. For children at Alpha house (currently there are 14 children living there, ranging in age from 18 to 8 months, with the majority being of school age) the beginning of school looks a little different. There may not be any new shoes or a backpack filled with school supplies, and excitement may be dimmed by the prospect of arriving at school in a taxi or having to apply for the free lunch program.
Alpha House, however, holds promise for these children—the promise of stable housing and other resources. Our ministry to Alpha House supports forward movement for children and families who are experiencing homelessness. We provide evening meals, childcare, overnight support, and, most importantly, human connection as parents find their way to new skills, employment, and the ability to provide new shoes and full backpacks.
The next opportunity for ministry at Alpha House will be the week of September 9, and if you would like to join in, you can sign up below or at the coffee hour on Sunday.
If you have any questions, Gail Einhaus, Paula Doering, or Anne Gere can answer them.
