Summer Writers Table - July 19

Sunday, July 19, 2020

Last Sunday we were thrilled to talk with University of Michigan historian Scott Ellsworth about his book, The Secret Game. It’s the story of a barrier-breaking basketball game that never should have happened, but did. And how that one game helped to spark a transformation of the game of basketball, but more importantly, how a game played in North Carolina in the middle of World War II played a role in breaking down racial barriers.

This week, Sunday, July 19 at 12:15 p.m., we invite you bring your lunch and come to a second Summer Writers Table conversation with writer Scott Ellsworth. With Scott’s help, we will explore how the story of the 1921 Tulsa Massacre unfolded and then was completely erased from history. Scott Ellsworth spent the last week in Tulsa, Oklahoma, observing an search for a mass burial site and he will report on his experience, and share the story of one of the largest, and most tragic race massacres in U.S. history. His first book, Death in a Promised Land, was the first-ever comprehensive history of the horrific Tulsa Race Riot of 1921. His current project is another examination of this spasm of racial violence.

Scott will also touch on his most recent book project, The World Beneath Their Feet: Mountaineering Madness and the Deadly Race to the Summit of the Himalayas and talk about his research and writing process. Bring your lunch on Sunday at 12:15 p.m., join us on Zoom and eat, learn and grow with us this summer—right at the table of our amazing writers!
