This fall (2017) began a new era in Campus Ministry at First Pres. Here Campus Ministries, UKirk@UM, is now a UKirk Ministry, connecting it with the strong national Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) network of campus ministries. Rev. Evans McGowan is the new Campus Ministries Coordinator working with two Resident Ministers, Eric Koenig-Reinke and Blair Buckley, as well as Peer Minister Essie Koenig-Reinke. As a team, we reach out to Michigan students as well as those on neighboring campuses. In addition, Resident Minister Rev. Dorothy Parks-Piatt coordinates our outreach to graduate and professional students and young adults.

At UKirk@UM we are building relationships with young adults who are thirsty for an authentic, welcoming community. Christ is calling us to meet with students wherever they are and to listen courageously to their stories. We look forward to thinking both compassionately and critically about how our Christian faith can respond to students’ personal lives, and challenge them to respond in service and to extend God’s justice and love to a hurting world.

Upcoming Events

Sunday Lunch

Let us treat you to Sunday Lunch! College students meet in the Welcome Center after our 11:00 a.m. worship service and then go to lunch (it’s on us!) to build community and foster relationships.

We also invite you to meet for “Wednesdays @ 8:00,” a weekly gathering for fellowship, snacks, and faithful conversation at 8:00 p.m. at First Pres.

The Coffee Crew

A highlight this semester has been mid-week coffee breaks attended by students calling themselves The Coffee Crew. We gather outside Starbucks in the Michigan Student Union to catch up on the week and warm up on these cold Michigan days!

Study Space in the French Room/Library

Want to donate snacks? April brings the end of Winter Semester, culminating in Michigan’s Commencement on Saturday, April 28. During the last two weeks of April, look for university students studying in the Library/ French Room. This space will be reserved for them to provide a quiet place to study during the week. We plan to provide “study snacks” for students as well. Please contact Rev. Evans McGowan ( if you can drop off baked-goods or other food items for our students studying in our building.

Ice Cream Social

Help Wanted! We are introducing a new outreach event this spring to kick-off exam week - an Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, April 17 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Please contact Rev. Evans McGowan ( if you are available to help set up, scoop ice cream, or clean up on the day of the social.

Throughout the year we will be offering various local mission opportunities for college students as well as a larger mission trip over Spring Break. Last year groups worked on a Habitat House in Ypsilanti and traveled to Belize to assist a community there.
