Local Missions

Local Mission Opportunities

First Presbyterian offers many local mission opportunities in southeastern Michigan that happen anywhere from once to several times a year to weekly. Find out more about some of these projects below by visiting their pages on our website:

Other local mission opportunities:

Blood Drives

The Deacons sponsor twice-yearly blood drives for the Red Cross, usually in October and April. Occasionally we host an emergency blood drive in July. Volunteers are needed for these events to prepare home-baked cookies, check people in during blocks of time, and generally extend hospitality to visitors to the church. For further information, contact Rev. Melissa Anne Rogers, mrogers@firstpresbyterian.org.

Family-to-Family Christmas

Every year our congregation generously provides Christmas gifts of food, clothing, and toys for approximately 150 families in the Washtenaw County area. As many of those who have participated in the program will attest, the act of reaching out to others in need adds a poignant reminder of the meaning and celebration of our Lord’s birth. There are many ways to participate: adopt a family and either purchase and deliver gifts yourself or buy a gift card for the family; make a donation of any amount to the Family-to-Family Project; or give a gift of your time by helping to buy and mail gift cards, deliver gifts, or work the sign-up table on Sunday mornings.

Food Gatherers

And Jesus said, "You feed them." Each Wednesday volunteer teams from First Pres prepare and serve a meal for hungry people at the Foodgatherers' Community Kitchen in the Delonis Center. Volunteer and join a cooking team (3 - 5 p.m.) or a serving team (5 - 7 p.m.). Volunteer occasionally, or every week, or anything in-between. Work in a fully equipped commercial kitchen with professional supervision. Share fellowship with a community of volunteers and Delonis Center clients. For more information, contact Barb Ladewski (ladewski@umich.edu) and/or Jane Hayes (hayesdf@comcast.net).

Rotating Shelter Program

January is not the time to sleep outdoors in Michigan! First Pres opens its doors the first two weeks of January to provide sleeping space for up to 30 men directed here by the Shelter Association. The Rotating Shelter provides temporary housing for the overflow population from the Delonis Center.

Support of Local Human Service and Social Justice Organizations

Local Mission Grant Program

The Local Mission Team of First Pres is a group of committed disciples seeking to listen for God’s calling in this moment and in this community. The Local Mission team undergoes a process of discernment, paying attention to the needs we observe in our area and the organizations that are addressing those needs. We are particularly interested in partnering with organizations that meet basic human needs with effective programs and build communities and/or tackle structural social inequities as they engage in long cycle solutions.

Visit our Local Mission Grant Program page for information on current guidelines, application information, and deadlines.
