Carson Smith: Young Adult Volunteer

First Pres celebrates with Carson Smith, a member of our congregation and a 2017 graduate from the University of Michigan, as he prepares to be a Young Adult Volunteer in Columbia this coming August 2017. The YAV program is a one-year service position in the PCUSA that has locations all around the world. YAVs live alongside others of faith, participate in the needs of their community, and experience new and meaning- ful relationships. We send our prayers and blessings as Carson embarks on this new adventure and we look forward to celebrating with him in the near future!

Why am I spending a YAV Year in Colombia?

Over the last four years, I’ve been able to do a lot as an undergraduate: sing in the church choir, work in electoral politics, and spend time studying policy. All of this work involves becoming close with people pursuing community. Being a Young Adult Volunteer is another opportunity to walk alongside others handling the questions which accompany our life together. As a country, Colombia is starting to implement a series of policies related to national peace. As someone interested in policymaking around peace studies, I look forward to building relationships in Colombia in the year ahead while revisiting my assumptions about politics, policy, and the faith that binds it all together.

Opportunities for Support

  1. Prayers for my time in Colombia: Pray for me and those I meet this year.
  2. Interest in my YAV Year: Invite me to speak with your church, small group, or committee. I love connecting with others. Also, follow my year online: carsonsmithblog.wordpress.com
  3. Financial Gifts: Consider making a tax-deductible contribution either as a one-time gift or through monthly installments to make this year of service possible. International volunteers are asked to partially cover program costs by raising $5,000. Your financial support would go toward travel expenses, housing, food, and other costs for the year.
