Sources of Information
A taped tour of the stained glass windows made by Marcie Westerman was the first and principal source of information on the windows. This was supplemented with information from books of Christian symbols and scriptural references were verified, and occasionally changed where another Gospel seemed to describe the scene more accurately. Pearl and Larry Summers produced various documents from the Archives about the windows, including relevant issues of First Press, and, most intriguingly, letters written to and from Mr. Lionel Liang of First Presbyterian and Mr. Rees of Wipell Company, about the design and manufacture of the windows. Other letters were addressed to Edwina Wilkinson, the church administrator at the time. My great thanks to Pearl and Larry for their patient archiving, so that they could produce all the documents without any tedious searching! I am further indebted to them for their careful editorial work, and checking my facts.
The starting point for the art works around the church was a set of notes from a tour of the church building given by Betty Anderson in February, 1993. I brought this up to date from church publications, but mostly by poking around the church and asking lots of questions, frequently learning fascinating, sometimes amusing, stories along the way. I am particularly indebted to Carl Binder who answered innumerable questions. Lorrayne Mulder provided much of the history of the needlepoint cushions. Other artists have given me information about their own work. Marilyn VanderVelde tracked down musical sources.
The room names came from a talk given by Pearl and Larry Summers in May 2006. General historical background is from the 1988 Sesquicentennial History of First Presbyterian Church, and a small history book printed for the 175th Anniversary Celebration in 2001.
Where there are errors of omission or commission in this description, they are my own. Please let me know about them.
