Monteith Hall
John Monteith, photograph.
The Rev. John Monteith (1788-1869) was a pioneer pastor and one of the three founders (with Fr. Gabriel Richard, and Judge Woodward) of the University of Michigan in 1817. He founded First Presbyterian, Ann Arbor, and also started several other nearby churches. However, he was a restless sort, and soon moved to more remote areas to start other churches. Mr. Monteith was an ardent abolitionist.
"Altar at Santiago de Chimayo" designed and executed by Angela Nagel Miller, 1994.
Appliquéd fabric hanging.

In 1993 Angie Miller was traveling in New Mexico and was fascinated by the old churches of the Southwest. She made paintings of the interior of several of them. The next summer Angie decided to make a quilt from her favorite, the altar of a small shrine, El Santuario de Chimayo, located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Church's Art Committee selected the quilt for the entrance to Monteith.
