Haiti Medical Mission Trip
9 members of the latest First Pres medical mission task force (MMTF) team to serve Haiti since the January earthquakes spent May 1-10 in Leogane, Haiti. The medical professionals served in the Hopital Ste Croix (HSC) field hospital, where an ER, OB ward and inpatient adult and pediatric unit provide 24 hour care in conjunction with Haitian MDs and RNs. They also provided PTSD and pharmacy services to the 7 day per week clinics on site. An engineering/project team worked at the original HSC to improve infrastructure in a temporary guest house area and support work on improvements that will reopen the original hospital this summer
Students from the school of nursing in Leogane (FSIL), founded by members of the MMTF, worked with our team and received clinical instruction in patient care and pharmacy therapeutics. We continue to coordinate ongoing projects with our Haitian partners for the future and to address and provide post earthquake support. Roles in rehabilitation and prosthetic services were explored for possible future involvement and coordination of medical teams who work in Leogane.
Our next team will travel to Haiti October 30- November 6, 2010. We welcome new members to the task force meetings the first Tuesday each month and to join us on a team. There also exists an opportunity for an agricultural professional this summer to work independent of a team setting.
